My Favorite Plant-Based Spots in Chicagoland (And Why You Need to Try Both)-Part 1

Eating Plant-Based Never Looked This Good

If you're plant-based or just plant-curious, I need to put you on to two restaurants I keep coming back to. Both are 100% vegan, both have incredible service, and both give you generous portions that make every dollar feel well spent. These aren't "good for vegan food" spots — they're just good food, full stop.

PLANTA Queen — Downtown Chicago

PLANTA Queen is the one you bring a date to. Located in River North, just walking distance from the Magnificent Mile and the riverfront, the vibe is cozy, dimly lit, and effortlessly classy; the kind of place that feels special without being stuffy. The menu is Asian-inspired and plant-based, and it does not miss. My must-orders are the Beef & Broccoli (wok seared shiitake "steak," tofu, scallion, and sesame — don't let the name fool you, it's incredible), the 1,000 Layer Crispy Potatoes, the sushi, and honestly — every single dessert. The mint lemonade alone is worth the trip. Parking in the area can get pricey, so I'd recommend finding a garage ahead of time and paying online before you go. Pro tip: pair this with a full day in the city and make an afternoon of it.

Abuelita Coco — Oak Lawn, Illinois

Abuelita Coco feels like walking into someone's grandmother's kitchen and in the absolute best way. Founded by Casandra Flores as a tribute to her late grandmother, this is Oak Lawn's first vegan café, and it shows so much heart in every corner. The vibe is bright, sunny, and family-friendly. Think checker board games while you wait, a welcoming atmosphere that works just as well for a casual date as it does for a family outing. The food is traditional Mexican dishes with a plant-based twist, and the flavors are there. My favorites are the tacos, corn ribs, handcut fries, and the milkshakes — but don't sleep on their wellness section with teas, herbs, and thoughtful little finds you won't see anywhere else. They also serve a variety of vegan ice cream options, which is a major bonus. The location is a little out of the way, but I drive an hour to get there and have done it multiple times without hesitation. That should tell you everything.

In the last 15+ years, I've indulged in savory and diverse vegan recipes at several resteraunts in IL and other states. Each month, I plan on sharing more locations and my personal experience while visiting. I hope it adds a nice palette switchup, when transitioning to a plant based diet or wanting to skip a day from cooking at home!

Leave a comment and let me know if you plan to visit either one of these locations or share some of your favorite spots!

With love & light,

Neshamah Sol aka Lecretia Akines
